MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has officially stated that its container vessel, the MSC Sariska V, was struck by two projectiles on June 1. The incident occurred as the ship was departing the port of Umm Qasr in Iraq. Fortunately, the company reported that no crew members sustained any injuries.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this incident highlights potential security risks in certain port areas, even outside commonly designated high-risk zones. While the immediate impact appears limited to the vessel itself with no reported cargo damage or crew casualties, such events can lead to increased insurance premiums (war risk), potential delays due to investigations, and a re-evaluation of routing or port calls by carriers. Forwarders should monitor carrier advisories closely for any changes to services calling at Umm Qasr or other Iraqi ports, and assess the implications for cargo insurance coverage on shipments transiting the region.
