Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has announced changes to its Emergency Fuel Surcharge (EFS) for several European short-sea shipping lanes. These revised surcharges will be implemented starting July 1, 2026, based on the Bill of Lading date.
The updated EFS will apply to cargo transported between Northern Europe, the North East Mediterranean, and within the intra-Europe short-sea markets. Additionally, the surcharge will affect trades connecting Greece, Türkiye, and the Black Sea regions.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this means an adjustment to overall shipping costs on these specific European short-sea routes. It is crucial for operational managers to factor in these revised surcharges when quoting rates and planning shipments for the affected lanes from July 2026 onwards. The change could influence carrier selection and routing decisions, particularly for intra-European and Mediterranean cargo flows.
