Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has finalized new supply agreements to enhance the use of bio-LNG fuel across its fleet of LNG-powered car carriers operating in Europe. The Japanese shipping giant will continue its partnership with Netherlands-based Titan, a subsidiary of Molgas, for bio-LNG deliveries in Northwest Europe, building on a multi-delivery contract established last year. For the Mediterranean region, MOL has engaged Switzerland-headquartered Axpo to manage the bio-LNG supply.
This strategic move by MOL is part of its broader decarbonization efforts. The bio-LNG procured under these agreements is International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC-EU) approved, indicating a focus on reducing the lifecycle carbon intensity of its operations. By expanding its bio-LNG sourcing, MOL aims to lower carbon dioxide emissions per unit of energy consumed by its vessels.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signifies MOL's commitment to sustainable shipping practices, particularly in the automotive sector. While there is no direct impact on immediate freight rates or capacity, the increased adoption of alternative fuels like bio-LNG contributes to a greener supply chain. This could become a differentiating factor for shippers prioritizing environmental performance, potentially influencing carrier selection in the long term. It also reflects a growing trend among major carriers to invest in and utilize cleaner energy sources, which may lead to more sustainable shipping options becoming standard.
