Maersk is updating its Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) for container shipments traveling from origins in China and Hong Kong to destinations in Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The revised rates will be applied starting June 15, 2026, and will remain in effect until further notice. For 20-foot containers heading to Kenya, the surcharge will be USD 1,000. For 40-foot and 45-foot containers bound for Kenya, the PSS will be USD 2,000.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this adjustment means an increase in shipping costs for the affected trade lane. It is crucial to factor these additional charges into pricing and logistics planning for cargo moving from Asia to East Africa. The implementation of a PSS often reflects periods of high demand or operational pressures on specific routes, indicating potential capacity constraints or increased operational costs for the carrier. Forwarders should communicate these changes to their clients promptly to avoid unexpected expenses and ensure accurate quotations for future bookings.
