The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has authorized a US$283 million grant agreement with the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) under the National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) Programme. This substantial funding is specifically allocated for the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility project, a critical initiative aimed at enhancing the port's intermodal rail capabilities.
This investment is part of a broader strategy to modernize and expand the port's infrastructure, particularly its on-dock rail facilities. The Pier B project is designed to streamline the movement of cargo directly to and from vessels via rail, reducing reliance on trucks for drayage and improving overall operational efficiency within the port complex.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this development is significant. The expansion of the Pier B On-Dock Rail Support Facility is expected to lead to improved rail service reliability and increased capacity for intermodal shipments. This could translate into faster transit times for cargo moving inland from the Port of Long Beach, potentially reducing supply chain costs and improving schedule adherence. Enhanced rail connectivity also contributes to environmental benefits by reducing truck emissions and traffic congestion around the port.
The project's authorization under the Mega Programme underscores its national importance in strengthening supply chain resilience and efficiency. Once completed, the upgraded facility is anticipated to play a crucial role in supporting the growing volume of container traffic through one of the busiest gateways in North America.
