Energy and marine consultancy ABL has been appointed to undertake a comprehensive study focusing on energy efficiency and emission reduction within Kenya's maritime industry. The objective is to enhance the sustainability and operational efficiency of the country's ports and vessels. This effort is expected to lay the groundwork for a strong decarbonization strategy, while simultaneously delivering economic advantages to Kenya.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this study signals a potential shift towards greener shipping practices in East Africa. While immediate impacts on rates or capacity are unlikely, the long-term implications could include new regulations or incentives for vessels calling at Kenyan ports, potentially favoring more fuel-efficient or alternative-fuel ships. This could influence carrier choices and routing decisions for cargo moving to and from the region, possibly leading to increased operational costs if older, less efficient vessels face restrictions or higher port charges.
