Jotun COSCO Marine Coatings (JCMC) has entered into a memorandum of cooperation with COSCO SHIPPING Bulk. This agreement will see JCMC supply hull performance solutions for 125 newbuild bulk carriers. The signing took place during the Global Partners Conference hosted by COSCO SHIPPING (Hong Kong) Co. and COSCO Shipping (Hainan) Co. in Boao, Hainan, on June 26.
The core of the agreement involves applying antifouling coatings to these vessels. These specialized coatings are designed to minimize hull resistance, which in turn optimizes fuel consumption and contributes to a reduction in overall emissions. Additionally, a select number of vessels will be evaluated for the potential implementation of Hull Skating Solutions (HSS), depending on their specific operational requirements.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signals a commitment by a major carrier to enhance fleet efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Improved hull performance can lead to more reliable vessel speeds and potentially lower bunker fuel consumption, which could indirectly contribute to more stable shipping schedules and potentially mitigate future fuel surcharges. While the direct impact on immediate rates may be minimal, it supports the broader industry trend towards sustainable shipping and operational optimization, which benefits supply chain predictability.
