Houston's bunker fuel market is currently experiencing robust demand for all three standard fuel grades: high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO), very low-sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), and low-sulfur marine gas oil (LSMGO). This high demand has resulted in tight availability for prompt deliveries this week.
Lead times for HSFO and VLSFO are now estimated at 8-10 days, while LSMGO deliveries require 5-7 days. Adding to these challenges, significant congestion and delays have been reported at the loading terminals, further impacting the efficiency of fuel supply.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this means that vessel bunkering in Houston will require careful advance planning. The extended lead times could lead to potential delays in vessel schedules if fuel orders are not placed well in advance. Shippers should factor in these potential delays when calculating transit times and managing inventory. The tight availability and terminal congestion may also put upward pressure on bunker prices in the short term, affecting overall voyage costs.
