Horizon, a company currently focused on producing Class 3 through Class 7 battery-electric trucks, has announced plans to enter the Class 8 segment. The company intends to begin production of these heavy-duty battery-electric tractors within the next 18 months. This strategic expansion positions Horizon to directly challenge competitors in the Class 8 electric truck market, such as the Tesla Semi.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, the introduction of more Class 8 battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) signifies an increasing shift towards electrification in long-haul and heavy-duty road transport. This development could lead to greater availability of zero-emission trucking options, potentially impacting operational costs through reduced fuel expenses and lower maintenance. Forwarders might see more opportunities to offer sustainable transport solutions to shippers, especially for regional and dedicated routes where charging infrastructure is more readily accessible. The growing competition in the BEV Class 8 market could also drive innovation and improve vehicle performance and range, making electric trucks a more viable option for a wider array of freight operations.
