The Port of HaminaKotka in Finland reported a substantial decrease in its cargo volumes for the period of January to May 2026. Total cargo handled amounted to 5.29 million tonnes, marking an 11.5% decline compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. Export volumes were particularly affected, dropping by 14.4% year-on-year to 3.62 million tonnes.
This downturn was primarily driven by reduced shipments of key commodities including dry bulk, sawn goods, wood pulp, paper, and general cargo. These categories collectively contributed to the overall negative performance of the port.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this decline at HaminaKotka indicates a potential softening in demand for specific Finnish export products, especially those related to forestry and bulk commodities. Forwarders managing shipments to or from this region should anticipate potentially lower vessel utilization or adjusted service schedules by carriers. It may also signal broader economic shifts impacting industrial production and trade in the Baltic Sea region, necessitating a review of routing options and capacity planning for future shipments.
