German police authorities in Longkamp intercepted a Polish timber transport combination on the B50 highway. The inspection revealed that the 6-axle vehicle was significantly overloaded, exceeding permissible weight limits. Furthermore, the truck exhibited critical technical deficiencies, most notably a cracked brake disc, which severely compromised its operational safety. The driver was also found to be in violation of mandatory driving and rest period regulations.
This incident underscores persistent issues within European road freight, particularly concerning vehicle maintenance and adherence to driver hour rules. Such violations not only pose significant safety risks to all road users but also create unfair competition for compliant carriers.
For freight forwarders and logistics managers, this event highlights the importance of rigorous due diligence when selecting road transport partners, especially for cross-border operations. Non-compliance can lead to severe delays, fines, and potential cargo damage or loss if vehicles are impounded. It also reinforces the need for robust internal processes to verify carrier compliance with safety and regulatory standards, particularly the EU Mobility Package rules on driver working hours and vehicle roadworthiness. Ensuring carriers maintain their fleets and drivers adhere to regulations is crucial for supply chain integrity and risk management.
