G2 Ocean recently announced an order for six new multipurpose vessels (MPVs), significantly contributing to the global MPV newbuild backlog. This agreement is one of three recent orders from various vessel operators, collectively adding to the worldwide MPV order book. The combined new orders now represent 280 ships, which is equivalent to 19% of the current operational MPV fleet.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this expansion in the MPV fleet signals increased capacity for project cargo and breakbulk shipments in the coming years. While new vessels take time to deliver, the growing order book indicates a positive outlook for specialized cargo movements, potentially leading to more flexible routing options and stable rates for oversized and heavy-lift projects. Forwarders should monitor delivery schedules to anticipate future capacity shifts.
