A new French startup, Truckly, launched by Marion Choppin and Diana Bajora in Marseille, is pioneering a concept called "co-camionnage." This initiative involves allowing passengers to share rides in the cabins of commercial trucks. The primary goal is to offer a supplementary transport option for individuals in areas where public transportation is either costly or scarce. Simultaneously, the platform aims to create a new income source for truck drivers and transport companies by monetizing otherwise empty passenger seats.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this concept, while primarily focused on passenger mobility, could indirectly impact driver availability or route planning if it gains significant traction. It might also introduce new considerations regarding insurance and liability for carriers participating in such schemes. However, its direct impact on cargo movement, rates, or capacity is expected to be minimal, as the core business remains freight transport. The initiative primarily addresses a social mobility issue rather than a logistics challenge.
