The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's vessel, LUMINARA, recently achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first international cruise ship to undergo LNG bunkering in Hokkaido, Japan. This operation was carried out last month at Wakamatsu Pier through a collaboration between MOL Techno-Trade, a subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Hokkaido Gas Co. The fuel transfer utilized a truck-to-ship method.
MOL stated that this achievement expands its existing LNG bunkering capabilities, which have previously been demonstrated in other Japanese ports such as Nagasaki, Beppu, and Hakata. The successful bunkering in Hokkaido further solidifies MOL Techno-Trade's position in the growing LNG supply sector.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signals the expanding infrastructure for alternative marine fuels, particularly LNG, in key maritime regions. While directly impacting the cruise sector, it indicates a broader trend towards decarbonization in shipping and could eventually influence bunker availability and pricing for cargo vessels as LNG bunkering networks mature. Increased adoption of LNG as a marine fuel can contribute to lower emissions, aligning with evolving environmental regulations and shipper demands for greener supply chains. This expansion of LNG bunkering points also offers more flexibility for vessels operating on this fuel type.
