Belgian gas shipowner Exmar has officially received the Antwerpen, a 46,000 cubic meter midsize gas carrier, from South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. This delivery is a landmark event for the maritime industry, as the Antwerpen is the first oceangoing vessel globally to be equipped with a dual-fuel engine capable of running on ammonia. This vessel represents the initial unit in a series planned by Exmar.
This development is crucial for freight forwarders and shippers as it signals a tangible progression in the adoption of alternative, lower-emission fuels for shipping. The introduction of ammonia-powered vessels could contribute to more sustainable supply chains, potentially influencing carrier choices and future carbon emission regulations. While direct rate impacts are not immediate, the long-term operational costs and regulatory compliance benefits of such vessels could eventually be factored into freight pricing and capacity planning, especially for gas and chemical shipments. It also highlights a growing trend towards green shipping corridors and the availability of more sustainable transport options.
