Belgian shipping company Exmar has announced the delivery of the inaugural vessel in its series of four newbuild ammonia dual-fuel midsize gas carriers (MGCs). This delivery represents a crucial milestone in the company's efforts to enhance the sustainability of its fleet and contribute to the broader goal of green shipping.
The adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel is gaining traction within the industry as a potential pathway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Dual-fuel engines allow vessels to operate on conventional fuels while also being capable of utilizing cleaner alternatives like ammonia, offering operational flexibility during the transition to a low-carbon future.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the introduction of such vessels signifies a growing trend towards more environmentally friendly shipping options. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity may not be substantial, it indicates a long-term shift that could eventually influence carrier selection and supply chain sustainability strategies. Shippers may increasingly seek carriers with greener fleets to meet their own environmental targets, potentially driving demand for services provided by vessels like Exmar's new MGCs.
