The AWESOME (Advanced Wind Energy System Optimisation & Monitoring for Efficiency) project, backed by €9 million in Horizon Europe funding, officially launched in Brussels on June 25th. This initiative seeks to facilitate the broader integration of wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) within the maritime industry. The project's core objective is to equip shipowners with reliable performance data, practical tools, and standardized methodologies for evaluating WAPS.
Kongsberg Maritime is spearheading the AWESOME project, collaborating with 14 other partners across Europe. A primary focus will be to overcome existing technical, operational, and regulatory obstacles that currently impede the widespread implementation of wind propulsion technologies.
For freight forwarders and supply chain managers, the successful development and adoption of WAPS could lead to several long-term impacts. Increased use of wind propulsion may contribute to lower fuel consumption and reduced operational costs for carriers, potentially influencing freight rates over time. Furthermore, it aligns with growing sustainability demands from shippers, offering greener transport options. Forwarders should monitor the project's progress as it could shape future vessel capabilities and potentially impact transit times or routing as vessels optimize for wind conditions.
