The European Union's Horizon Europe program has initiated the Advanced Wind Energy System Optimisation & Monitoring for Efficiency (AWESOME) project. This initiative is designed to reduce uncertainties associated with wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) and accelerate their integration into commercial shipping.
Led by Kongsberg Maritime, the AWESOME project brings together a consortium of 14 European partners, including industry stakeholders, research institutions, and clusters. Their collective goal is to support the maritime sector's transition towards low and zero-emission operations by improving the efficiency and reliability of WAPS technology.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the successful implementation of projects like AWESOME could lead to more sustainable shipping options in the future. While immediate impacts on rates or capacity are unlikely, the long-term adoption of WAPS could contribute to lower bunker costs for carriers, potentially translating into more stable or reduced freight rates, and help meet evolving environmental regulations. This also aligns with shipper demand for greener supply chains.
The project is expected to contribute to the broader decarbonization goals of the shipping industry, potentially influencing future vessel designs and operational practices.
