A recent study commissioned by Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Europe and carried out by Rystad Energy indicates that the European Union's Methane Regulation (EUMR) is not a factor in the current rise of oil and gas prices or the supply challenges impacting Europe. The report, released on June 22, asserts that there is no credible evidence linking the regulation to these market pressures.
This finding supports Rystad Energy's earlier assessment from December, which suggested that the EUMR could enhance European energy security by fostering transparency, minimizing waste, and aiding the EU's transition away from Russian fossil fuels. The new analysis confirms this perspective remains valid despite the ongoing geopolitical crisis stemming from disruptions in the Middle East.
For freight forwarders and supply chain analysts, this report suggests that the EUMR is unlikely to directly influence energy costs for vessel operations or other logistics activities. Instead, the focus for price volatility and supply chain stability should remain on broader geopolitical events and their impact on global energy markets, rather than on specific European environmental regulations. This means that while sustainability efforts continue, the immediate operational cost drivers for bunker fuels are still external market forces.
