DNV has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for its innovative design of a 1,400 TEU LPG dual-fuel feeder container ship. This certification was formally presented during the Posidonia 2026 event held in Athens. The primary objective of this new design is to introduce and encourage the use of alternative fuels within the smaller container vessel sector, a segment where the transition to greener energy sources has been notably slower compared to the larger container ship categories.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signals a potential shift in the feeder vessel market. The introduction of more LPG dual-fuel ships could contribute to a greener supply chain, potentially influencing carrier selection for shippers focused on sustainability. While immediate rate impacts are unlikely, the long-term trend towards decarbonization suggests that such vessels may eventually offer more competitive rates or preferential routing for environmentally conscious cargo. It also indicates a growing diversification of fuel options beyond LNG for newbuilds, which could lead to more robust and flexible bunkering infrastructure in the future.
