Four containers dislodged from a container ship and landed on a bunker vessel while cargo operations were underway at the Antwerp Gateway terminal within the Port of Antwerp Bruges. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in some material damage to the bunker vessel and a limited release of oil into the water. Fortunately, no personnel sustained injuries.
DP World, the operator of the Antwerp Gateway terminal, confirmed the event and stated that safety protocols were immediately activated. The focus remains on ensuring the well-being of all individuals at their facilities.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, such incidents, while localized, highlight the inherent risks in port operations. Although this event did not directly impact container throughput or cause widespread delays, it underscores the potential for disruptions. Forwarders should always consider cargo insurance as a safeguard against unforeseen events like this, which can lead to cargo damage or delays, even if minor. Furthermore, it reinforces the importance of clear communication from terminal operators regarding incident resolution and potential impacts on vessel schedules.
