BNSF Railway has introduced the RELOAD program, an initiative designed to improve the utilization of empty shipping containers. This program specifically targets imported containers, enabling them to carry domestic cargo heading to the US West Coast. After delivering the domestic freight, these containers can then be efficiently returned overseas.
The primary goal of RELOAD is to enhance equipment efficiency for ocean carriers and intermodal operators. By filling otherwise empty containers on their westbound journey, BNSF aims to reduce the movement of unproductive empty equipment and optimize logistics flows.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this program could offer new opportunities for cost savings and improved efficiency for westbound domestic shipments. It may lead to better capacity utilization on rail networks and potentially more competitive rates for moving goods to the West Coast, especially for shippers whose cargo aligns with the return routes of import containers. It also addresses the persistent challenge of repositioning empty containers, which often incurs significant costs for carriers.
