A new Belgian campaign, PortAware, has been launched to enhance the resilience of port and ship personnel against criminal influence. The initiative aims to educate employees about the various methods criminals employ to gain access to information, cargo flows, and logistical operations. This program is a direct response to evolving criminal strategies targeting the maritime sector.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this campaign signifies a proactive step by Belgian authorities to secure the supply chain. Increased awareness and training among port and ship staff could lead to fewer incidents of cargo theft, illicit smuggling, or data breaches, potentially improving schedule reliability and reducing insurance risks. Enhanced security measures at ports and on vessels also contribute to a more stable and predictable operating environment, which is crucial for planning and executing international shipments. While direct rate impacts are not immediate, a more secure environment can indirectly lead to lower operational costs over time by mitigating losses and disruptions.
