Antipollution, a subsidiary of V Group, has entered into a Letter of Intent (LoI) with ONEX Shipyards & Technologies for the construction of a fleet of new vessels. The agreement includes an initial order for four marine pollution reception and oil recovery vessels, with an option for an additional four, bringing the potential total to eight ships. These vessels will be built to ABS Class standards at ONEX's shipyards located in Elefsis and Syros, Greece.
The primary function of these new vessels will be to collect both liquid and solid waste generated by commercial ships operating in Greek ports. The collected waste will then be transported to Antipollution's onshore facilities, where it will undergo processing and conversion into solid fuel. This initiative represents a significant step towards improving environmental protection and sustainable waste management practices within the Greek maritime sector.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signifies an enhancement in port services in Greece, potentially leading to more efficient waste disposal for vessels calling at these ports. Improved environmental compliance infrastructure can contribute to smoother port operations and reduce potential delays related to waste management. While not directly impacting freight rates or capacity, it underscores a growing focus on sustainability within port ecosystems, which can indirectly influence carrier choices and operational planning in the long term.
This project aligns with broader industry trends towards environmental responsibility and the circular economy, where waste products are repurposed. The construction of these vessels will support the local shipbuilding industry in Greece and is expected to bolster Antipollution's capacity to provide essential environmental services to the shipping community.
