Anemoi Marine Technologies, in partnership with Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) and ship operator Hafnia, has successfully concluded a joint development project (JDP) focused on integrating rotor sails into the design of a medium-range (MR) tanker. This innovative design has received an Approval in Principle (AiP) from the classification society DNV, confirming its technical feasibility and compliance with safety standards.
The completed concept incorporates an EX-rated version of Anemoi's 5x35m folding rotor sail technology. This specific rating is crucial as it ensures the equipment meets the stringent explosion safety requirements for installation in hazardous areas found on the decks of product tankers.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signals a continued trend towards sustainable shipping solutions. The integration of rotor sails aims to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for MR tankers, which are vital for transporting refined petroleum products. While not directly impacting immediate rates or capacity, such advancements contribute to carriers' long-term decarbonization goals, potentially influencing future operational costs and compliance with environmental regulations like the EU ETS. Forwarders may see more vessels equipped with these technologies entering service, supporting their own sustainability targets and offering greener transport options to shippers.
