ABS has granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) for the electrical analysis and design of a 16,000-TEU ultra-large container ship featuring a battery hybrid system. This approval is part of an ongoing joint development project between the classification society and the shipbuilders. The first phase of this project, which focused on electric propulsion systems, also received an ABS AiP last year.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the development of such vessels signifies a continued industry push towards decarbonization and more sustainable shipping practices. While these ships are still in the design phase, their eventual deployment could contribute to a greener global fleet, potentially influencing future emissions regulations and offering more environmentally friendly options for shippers. The integration of battery hybrid systems aims to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions, which could have long-term implications for bunker costs and environmental compliance.
