ABS and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HD HHI) have announced a joint development project focused on creating a U.S.-flagged oil and chemical tanker. The initiative will concentrate on the design of a 50,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) vessel. Under the terms of this agreement, ABS will be responsible for reviewing the tanker's design to confirm its compliance with both ABS Rules and the stringent requirements set forth by the U.S. Coast Guard.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this project signifies a potential future increase in U.S.-flagged tonnage, which could impact domestic shipping regulations and cabotage requirements. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity is minimal as this is a design phase, it could eventually contribute to a more robust U.S. domestic fleet for chemical and oil product transport, potentially influencing routing and carrier selection for specific types of cargo within U.S. waters.
