The American Trucking Associations (ATA) reported that its For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index experienced no month-over-month change in April 2026, maintaining a reading of 117.8. This stability follows a period of stronger performance earlier in the year.
Despite the stagnant monthly figure, the index demonstrated a 3.5% rise when compared to April 2025. This year-over-year growth suggests a continued, albeit moderated, expansion in the volume of freight moved by the for-hire trucking sector.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this flat tonnage reading indicates a stable, rather than growing, demand environment for road freight in the short term. While capacity might not be immediately strained, the year-over-year increase suggests that overall freight volumes are still higher than last year, which could influence contract negotiations and spot market rates. Forwarders should monitor regional variations, as national averages may not reflect specific lane dynamics.
