Greek shipping company Thenamaris has reportedly entered into an agreement with HD Hyundai Mipo in South Korea for the construction of four new MR2 product tankers. Each of these vessels will have a deadweight tonnage of 50,000 dwt and will be fitted with exhaust gas scrubbers. The deliveries for these newbuilds are anticipated to occur progressively throughout 2028.
This order signifies Thenamaris's continued investment in its tanker fleet, specifically in the medium-range segment which is crucial for transporting refined petroleum products globally.
For freight forwarders and shippers, an increase in the MR2 tanker fleet, particularly with new, more efficient vessels, could contribute to stable or potentially improved capacity in the product tanker market in the coming years. While the immediate impact on rates is minimal due to the distant delivery schedule, it signals long-term fleet modernization and potential for more reliable transport options for refined fuels and chemicals.
