Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) of South Africa has signed a 25-year terminal operator agreement with Ukwanda LNG. This partnership will facilitate the development of an onshore Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification facility at the Port of Ngqura. The project, valued at approximately ZAR 22 billion ($1.35 billion USD), is a significant step towards positioning Ngqura as a strategic energy hub within the region.
This initiative is expected to bolster South Africa's energy security and contribute to its industrial growth. For freight forwarders and logistics operations, the development of an LNG terminal at Ngqura could lead to increased vessel traffic, particularly LNG carriers, and potentially impact port call schedules and available berths for other cargo types. It might also stimulate industrial development in the surrounding areas, generating new cargo volumes for various transport modes.
