Seanergy Maritime, a Greek company specializing in capesize vessels, is significantly ramping up its fleet renewal program. The company has announced the addition of another newbuilding to its orderbook, bringing the total to six eco-design bulkers. These vessels represent an investment of around $460 million.
The expanded orderbook now includes five 181,500 dwt capesize vessels and one 211,000 dwt newcastlemax bulker. Deliveries for these new vessels are anticipated to commence in 2027.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this development signals a future increase in modern, potentially more fuel-efficient capesize capacity. While the immediate impact on rates or capacity is minimal due to the distant delivery dates, the long-term trend points towards a more sustainable and efficient dry bulk fleet. This could eventually lead to more reliable and environmentally compliant shipping options for large volume dry bulk commodities.
