Danish logistics provider Scan Global Logistics (SGL) has announced an expanded agreement with container shipping line Hapag-Lloyd to continue leveraging its book-and-claim mechanism for carbon emissions reduction. This system allows SGL to book cargo shipments while claiming reductions in CO2 emissions, contributing to more sustainable supply chains. The initial partnership between SGL and Hapag-Lloyd's low-emission shipping program began in 2024, and this latest development signifies a deepening of their commitment to environmental goals.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, such agreements offer a verifiable method to reduce Scope 3 emissions associated with their clients' cargo movements. The book-and-claim system provides a flexible approach to decarbonization, enabling forwarders to offer greener shipping options without requiring physical segregation of cargo on specific vessels. This can be a key differentiator in a market increasingly focused on sustainability, potentially impacting carrier selection and pricing for environmentally conscious shippers.
