The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) recorded an increase in breakbulk cargo volumes in April when compared to the same month last year. The port handled 125,411 tonnes of breakbulk, a rise attributed to strong industrial demand. This positive trend for breakbulk contrasts with the performance of container traffic at the NWSA during April, which saw a reduction in volumes. Container throughput for the month stood at 218,239 TEUs, a decline from figures reported in April of the previous year.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this data suggests a potential shift in cargo composition at NWSA. While container capacity might be more readily available due to decreased volumes, the increased breakbulk activity could indicate higher demand for specialized handling and project cargo services. Forwarders dealing with industrial goods may find NWSA a more active gateway for their breakbulk shipments, potentially impacting vessel schedules and terminal operations for this cargo type.
