MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company announced the inclusion of Napier, New Zealand, as a new port call on its Eagle service. This service links the US East Coast with Australia and New Zealand. The updated rotation will commence in June, according to industry reports.
The expanded route will now include Philadelphia, Savannah, Freeport, Balboa, Papeete, Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Wellington, Napier, Tauranga, Balboa, and Cristobal, before returning to Philadelphia. This adjustment reflects MSC's strategy to enhance its service offerings and geographical reach within the Oceania region.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the addition of Napier provides a direct container shipping option to New Zealand's Hawke's Bay region, a key agricultural and horticultural area. This could lead to improved transit times and potentially more competitive rates for cargo moving between the US East Coast and this part of New Zealand, reducing reliance on transshipment or feeder services from other New Zealand ports. It offers increased schedule reliability and direct access for local exports and imports.
