Containerized imports into the Middle East experienced a sharp decline of 64% in March compared to the previous year. This significant reduction occurred immediately after the escalation of conflict in the region at the end of February. Concurrently, exports from the Middle East also saw a substantial decrease, falling by 62% year-on-year during the same period.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this data suggests a considerable reduction in available cargo volumes for both inbound and outbound shipments in the Middle East. This could lead to altered vessel rotations, potential blank sailings, and a re-evaluation of capacity deployment by carriers. Forwarders should anticipate reduced demand for services to and from the region, potentially impacting pricing and available slots on vessels. Careful monitoring of carrier schedules and capacity adjustments will be crucial for planning and managing client expectations.
