Intercargo, the international association for dry bulk shipowners, has released its "Ship-to-Ship Transfer Guidelines for Bulk Carriers." This publication marks the first dedicated industry standard for STS transfer operations within the dry bulk sector. The guidelines aim to provide a structured framework for these complex maneuvers.
Ship-to-Ship transfers are crucial for facilitating cargo operations in geographical areas where conventional port infrastructure is insufficient. This includes locations unable to accommodate the size or draft requirements of larger vessels, or those lacking the capacity to handle specific cargo volumes. Such operations are particularly prevalent in regions with developing or limited port facilities, allowing for the efficient movement of dry bulk commodities.
