Italian energy firm Eni announced new long-term agreements to significantly increase its global liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio. The company has finalized three deals with LNG sellers involved in Indonesia's South Hub and North Hub gas projects. These agreements will provide an additional 2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of LNG, sourced from Eni-operated gas development initiatives within the Kutei Basin.
The LNG volumes are slated for supply through the Bontang LNG facilities located in East Kalimantan. This strategic move aligns with Eni's broader objective to expand its LNG bunkering capabilities and strengthen its position in the global gas market.
For freight forwarders and shippers, an increase in LNG supply, particularly from a major player like Eni, could contribute to the stability and availability of LNG as a marine fuel. As more vessels adopt LNG for propulsion to meet decarbonization targets, a robust supply chain for LNG bunkering becomes crucial. This development suggests a potential for more competitive pricing and wider accessibility of LNG bunkering services in key maritime regions, particularly in Southeast Asia, which could influence vessel routing and fuel procurement strategies for LNG-powered ships.
