Global project forwarder deugro has successfully concluded an eight-year logistics campaign, which involved the transportation of 140 oversized car bodies from various manufacturing facilities in Europe to their final destination in Salt Lake City, Utah. This extensive project, executed between 2018 and 2026, was a complex door-to-door operation.
The logistical challenge necessitated a highly coordinated multimodal relay. This included the use of road transport for initial and final mile delivery, river barges for inland European waterways, ocean-going roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessels for transatlantic shipping, and rail transport within North America. The project also involved the development of custom saddles to secure the oversized cargo and focused on achieving cost efficiencies throughout the supply chain.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this project highlights the complexities and specialized requirements of handling oversized cargo over long distances and across multiple transport modes. It underscores the importance of meticulous planning, coordination between various carriers and transport types, and potentially custom engineering solutions for unique cargo. Such projects often involve significant lead times and require expertise in project cargo management to ensure timely and damage-free delivery, which can influence routing decisions and specialized equipment procurement for future similar shipments.
