BW Epic Kosan (BWEK), a prominent transporter of LPG, petrochemicals, and specialty gases, is increasing its collaboration with GIT Coatings. The partnership focuses on implementing GIT's biocide-free, graphene-based hull coating technology across additional vessels within BWEK's LPG fleet. To date, five LPG gas carriers have received this coating, with another currently undergoing treatment in dry dock.
This decision to expand the application of GIT Coatings' solution stems from positive results observed on previously treated vessels. BWEK reported a 6% reduction in fuel consumption for these ships when compared to their performance out of dry dock. This indicates that the graphene-based coating effectively maintains hull performance, reducing drag and improving overall operational efficiency without relying on traditional biocides.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, developments in hull coating technology like this are relevant as they directly impact carrier operating costs. Reduced fuel consumption for carriers such as BWEK can contribute to more stable or potentially lower bunker surcharges in the long term, enhancing predictability in ocean freight pricing for LPG and specialty gas shipments. Improved vessel efficiency also supports schedule reliability by reducing unforeseen maintenance needs related to hull fouling.
