The Bristol Port Company in southwest England recently commissioned an £11.4 million Liebherr LHM 800 mobile harbour crane and a new hopper system at its Royal Portbury Dock. This substantial investment aims to significantly increase the port's capabilities for handling bulk commodities and vehicle volumes.
The new Liebherr LHM 800 crane is designed for high-performance bulk material handling, capable of lifting up to 150 tonnes and offering a maximum outreach of 64 meters. Its integration with a modern hopper system will streamline the discharge process for various bulk cargoes, including aggregates, grain, and animal feed. This development comes as the port experiences a surge in vehicle throughput, indicating a broader growth in cargo demand.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this upgrade at Bristol Port means enhanced operational efficiency and potentially faster turnaround times for vessels carrying bulk and RoRo cargo. The increased capacity and improved handling speeds could lead to better schedule reliability and reduced demurrage costs. Forwarders dealing with shipments to and from the UK's southwest region will find the port better equipped to manage larger volumes and a wider range of commodities, offering more robust options for their supply chains.
