Bilbao Port is moving forward with the construction of its Central Breakwater, a critical infrastructure project aimed at substantially increasing the port's capacity. This expansion is specifically designed to accommodate a greater volume of breakbulk, project cargo, industrial logistics, and energy-related traffic. The progress was noted during a recent visit by EU Atlantic Corridor officials, including François Bausch and Gesine Meissner, who assessed the port's connectivity and the ongoing works.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signifies future improvements in handling capabilities at Bilbao. Increased quay space for specialized cargo types like breakbulk and project cargo can lead to more efficient vessel turnaround times and potentially greater flexibility in routing oversized or heavy-lift shipments to and from the Iberian Peninsula. The enhanced capacity is expected to support the growing demands of industrial projects and the energy sector, offering forwarders more reliable options for these complex logistics operations.
