TMC Compressors, based in Norway, has announced a new agreement with Jiangnan Shipyard. Under this contract, TMC will equip two very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) currently under construction for Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) with comprehensive marine compressed air systems. Each of these 90,000 cubic meter capacity vessels will receive a full suite of compressors designed for both control and service air applications.
This development highlights the growing demand for ammonia as a marine fuel and energy carrier. The expansion of the VLAC segment indicates a strategic shift in the maritime industry towards alternative fuels, driven by decarbonization goals.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the increasing adoption of ammonia-fueled vessels, like these VLACs, signals a future shift in shipping operations. While direct rate or capacity impacts are not immediate, this trend supports the long-term viability of green shipping corridors and could influence bunker availability and pricing for alternative fuels in the future. Forwarders should monitor the development of ammonia bunkering infrastructure and its potential effect on vessel routing and port calls as more such ships enter service.
