Finnish transport companies are experiencing significant financial losses, estimated at over 50 million euros annually, due to recurring problems with AdBlue and exhaust gas after-treatment systems, particularly during the harsh winter season. A comprehensive survey involving 755 transport businesses in Finland indicated that four out of five companies have encountered unusual malfunctions in their emission control systems at least once, or even repeatedly. Interestingly, the study highlighted that older truck models tend to exhibit fewer of these issues compared to newer vehicles.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this situation translates into potential delays and increased operational costs for road freight movements within Finland, especially during winter. The unreliability of emission control systems can lead to unexpected vehicle downtime, impacting delivery schedules and requiring costly repairs. This could also necessitate adjustments in fleet management strategies, potentially favouring older, more robust vehicles for certain routes or requiring enhanced maintenance protocols for newer trucks to mitigate AdBlue-related failures.
