The Pacific Merchant Shipping Association has reported that the San Pedro Bay ports, encompassing Los Angeles and Long Beach, experienced significant increases in cargo dwell times during September. This surge is attributed to record-breaking volumes, which have effectively prolonged the traditional peak shipping season. Both rail and truck-bound cargo faced extended periods of inactivity within the port complex.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this situation translates directly into potential delays for shipments originating from or destined for the US West Coast. Higher dwell times can lead to increased demurrage and detention charges, disrupt inland transportation schedules, and impact overall supply chain predictability. Forwarders should anticipate longer lead times and consider alternative routing or intermodal options if possible, while closely monitoring port updates and communicating proactively with shippers about potential delays.
