In the Netherlands, 75 road transport companies filed for bankruptcy in the first half of 2026. This figure represents a substantial rise compared to the 52 bankruptcies recorded during the corresponding period in the previous year. The increase occurs amidst growing operational expenses faced by carriers.
Despite these financial pressures on the transport industry, the Dutch government has indicated that it does not currently see a need to provide further financial assistance or support measures to the sector.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this trend suggests potential instability and reduced capacity within the Dutch road transport market. Shippers might face increased rates or fewer options for domestic and intra-European road freight services originating from or transiting through the Netherlands. It highlights the ongoing challenges faced by smaller and medium-sized carriers in managing costs, which could lead to further consolidation or market exits.
