This oversight poses a risk for cargo stability and can lead to significant losses. Traditional forecasts typically provide information on wave height, but this metric alone does not offer a complete picture of how waves will interact with a ship's hull and affect its motion.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this study underscores a critical blind spot in current voyage planning and risk assessment. Inaccurate or incomplete wave condition data means that vessels might encounter unexpected rolling, potentially damaging sensitive or poorly secured cargo. This could lead to increased cargo claims, delays, and higher insurance premiums. Forwarders should consider seeking more advanced forecasting tools or requesting more detailed wave spectrum analysis from carriers to better mitigate these risks, especially for high-value or fragile shipments. It also highlights the importance of proper cargo lashing and stowage, even when forecasts appear benign.
