NORDEN, in collaboration with Microsoft and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), has successfully completed a pilot program demonstrating the first verified maritime emissions reductions through the RSB Book & Claim registry. This initiative marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the shipping industry by enabling companies to purchase verified emissions reductions without requiring sustainable fuels to be physically used on their specific cargo voyages.
The Book & Claim system functions by allowing the environmental benefits of sustainable fuels, such as biofuels, to be transferred and claimed by a company, even if the fuel was consumed on a different vessel or route. This mechanism addresses the current challenge of limited availability and high cost of sustainable marine fuels, which often makes it impractical to ensure their use on every individual shipment. By separating the environmental attribute from the physical fuel, companies like Microsoft can invest in sustainable fuel production and usage across the maritime sector, thereby contributing to overall industry decarbonization.
