Caturus LLC has revealed plans for a significant expansion of its Commonwealth LNG export terminal located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The proposed project involves adding five new liquefaction trains, which would increase the facility's output by 7.75 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). This expansion would bring the total planned capacity of the Commonwealth LNG site to approximately 17.25 Mtpa, nearly doubling its initial design.
This announcement comes just four months after Caturus reached a final investment decision (FID) on the initial phase of the project, which comprised six trains with a capacity of 9.5 Mtpa. The rapid progression to an expansion plan underscores strong market demand and investor confidence in US liquefied natural gas exports.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this expansion signals a long-term increase in LNG export volumes from the US Gulf Coast. While direct impact on container or general cargo rates is minimal, it reinforces the region's importance as a major energy export hub, potentially influencing vessel traffic and port services in the area. The increased production will require specialized LNG carriers, contributing to demand in the global LNG shipping market.
