The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) reported a rise in its transportation expenditures for the third quarter compared to the previous year. This increase is attributed to a significant operational change involving the reallocation of certain parcel volumes to air cargo services, which are now being handled by UPS.
This shift comes as the USPS continues to implement its 10-year "Delivering for America" plan, which aims to modernize its network and improve efficiency. The new contract with UPS, which began in September 2023, replaced a long-standing agreement with FedEx. This transition involves complex logistical adjustments, impacting how packages are sorted and transported across the country.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signals potential changes in domestic parcel delivery dynamics and capacity utilization. The increased reliance on air cargo, even for a portion of USPS volume, could influence demand for air freight services and potentially impact pricing on certain lanes. Forwarders might observe adjustments in ground network capacity as USPS optimizes its operations under the new contract, which could affect lead times and routing options for last-mile deliveries.
