RINA has launched a new ship propulsion system named 'Mermaid,' designed to offer a 'future-ready' solution for vessel owners. The core objective of this concept is to significantly decrease fuel consumption, lower emissions, boost operational resilience, and safeguard the long-term value of maritime assets. The Mermaid concept fundamentally redefines the role of a vessel's highly efficient two-stroke main engine. Instead of solely providing propulsion, this engine becomes the primary source of onboard power, thereby reducing the dependency on less efficient auxiliary engines.
This innovative architecture integrates several key components: a shaft generator, a propeller shaft clutch, and a battery energy storage system. By combining these elements, RINA aims to enhance overall efficiency without compromising performance.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, such advancements in ship design can translate into more reliable schedules due to improved operational resilience and potentially lower bunker surcharges as vessels become more fuel-efficient. Reduced emissions also contribute to a greener supply chain, which is increasingly important for shippers and regulatory compliance. While direct rate impacts are not immediate, widespread adoption of such technologies could contribute to more stable and environmentally friendly shipping operations in the long term, potentially influencing carrier choices and trade lane dynamics.
